Chapter 17 - Christopher’s debt was not gone

Divorce discovery forced full financial disclosure.
Christopher’s current individual debt:
$41,300.
Not counting mortgage.
How?
Partly Florence.
Partly lifestyle.
Partly old habits.
Three cards.
One personal loan.
Some charges tied to helping Florence.
Some travel.
Some ordinary overspending.
No gambling.
No secret girlfriend.
No cocaine habit.
No hidden luxury car.
Again, reality was less cinematic.
Christopher had spent years managing appearances.
Good house.
Good clothes.
Nice dinners.
Helping Mom.
Never saying:
We cannot afford that this month.
He preferred debt to admitting limits.
His $32,000 pre-marriage debt had been cleared by Dad’s loan.
But the habit behind it never changed.
He simply rebuilt different balances later.
I asked Dana:
“Was any of this in my name?”
Some joint card balances:
Yes.
Approximately $9,400.
My individual credit:
Clean.
That mattered.
Christopher had not secretly opened cards in my name.
May you like
I was almost relieved.
Standards become strange.
