Chapter 23 - Florence writes one letter

Two years after the suitcase, I received an envelope.
Florence’s handwriting.
I almost threw it away.
Then opened it.
The first paragraph:
I am sorry our disagreement became physical.
I stopped.
Not good.
Our disagreement.
Physical.
Passive fog.
I put it down.
Three weeks later, another envelope arrived.
I almost did not open that one either.
This time:
I searched your suitcase because I believed Christopher had paid for most of what was in your home and that you were leaving with property that belonged to him. I was wrong about the facts and wrong to search your things.
Better.
Then:
I watched Christopher strike you and told you that you deserved it. That was cruel. You did not deserve to be hit.
I read that paragraph twice.
Then:
I also repeated financial stories Christopher told me because they made me feel proud of him. When evidence contradicted them, I resisted because admitting I was wrong meant admitting I had judged you for years on things I never verified.
Specific.
No request for forgiveness.
No:
But you were disrespectful.
No:
Family is family.
I replied with one sentence.
May you like
I received your letter. Thank you for naming what happened accurately.
That was enough.
