The state supreme court building in Albany was a massive, historic structure of grey granite, its wide steps covered in a light layer of morning frost as Samantha’s car pulled up to the curb on Friday morning. The courtroom was completely empty, save for the three senior judges on the compliance bench and Arthur Vance—a sharp-featured man in a corporate suit who looked at Samantha with a mixture of surprise and hidden panic.
Samantha took her place at the plaintiff’s table, her face a perfect, unreadable sheet of ice. She didn't hand out paper briefs; she uploaded a digital file stream directly to the judges' bench monitors.
"The state compliance order signed by Arthur Vance in 2022 was an act of deliberate, coordinated corporate espionage," Samantha declared, her voice echoing through the high-ceilinged room with absolute authority. "The forensic transaction logs show that three days before the shutdown of the Fairmount Project, Arthur's offshore account in the Cayman Islands received a wire transfer of two hundred and forty thousand dollars from Phobos Digital—a shell company controlled by Julian Vane and the Callahan trust."
Arthur Vance stood up frantically, his hands slamming against the mahogany table. "Your Honors, this is an administrative matter from four years ago! The plaintiff has no standing to challenge a finalized state compliance decree!"
"The plaintiff is the majority shareholder of the Kensington Foundation, which holds the original intellectual property title for the Fairmount infrastructure," the Chief Judge countered, his eyes locked onto his monitor screen as the live data verified the bribery trail. "The court finds the evidence of conflict of interest and corporate fraud to be absolute."
The judge raised his gavel, bringing it down against the wooden block with a loud, definitive slam that signaled the end of the final Vance conspiracy.

"The 2022 compliance order is officially voided," the judge announced. "The court hereby issues an immediate execution order for a full recovery levy. The entire fiber-optic network sector is to be returned to the Kensington Foundation's control, effective at noon today. Mr. Arthur Vance, you are ordered to remain in the courtroom; state marshals are outside to take you into custody pending a criminal indictment."
Samantha stood up, smoothing down the front of her white wool coat. She didn't look at Arthur as he was led away by the marshals. The final variable had been resolved, the stolen infrastructure had been recovered, and the ledger of her father’s life's work was finally, perfectly balanced.
