Chapter 14 - THE BRUISE CASEThe assault investigation involving my face moved separately.

Whitcomb found one useful witness.

My former neighbor, Glenn Foster, had been trimming hedges across the street when I left Vanessa’s house.

He saw me come out holding a tissue to my nose.

He had not seen me enter injured.

He called:

“Eulalia, you okay?”

I said:

“I fell.”

That hurt our case slightly.

Vanessa’s attorney emphasized it.

I had said I fell.

But context mattered.

I had fallen.

After being shoved.

People in shock do not always deliver legally complete summaries to neighbors.

The doorbell camera was more useful.

Vanessa’s system recorded video outside the front entrance.

No audio inside.

At 4:41, I entered without facial bruising.

At 5:17, the front door opened.

I came out fast.

Blood on the tissue.

Vanessa appeared behind me.

She stepped onto the porch.

I turned.

She pointed at me.

I left.

No shove visible.

Still, timing.

My upper-arm bruising was photographed the same evening.

Could the fall itself cause it?

Possibly.

Could gripping cause it?

Also possible.

The prosecutor did not overstate certainty.

Eventually the assault count would depend on my testimony plus circumstantial evidence.

Not cinematic.

Real.
