Chapter 19 - NEFTALÍ’S LAST DECISIONThe final entry in my son’s notebook was dated twelve days before his last hospitalization.

Moved originals to BRCB. Cabin copies under altar board. Mom will look there eventually. Need tell Mara where if I can’t tell Mom.

He never told Mara.

Why hide the cabin copies?

Because Vanessa knew about the bank box.

She did not know he had duplicated evidence.

The cabin had belonged to Arthur’s parents.

Vanessa hated it.

Called it moldy.

Visited perhaps twice.

Neftalí knew I still kept Arthur’s Bible by the altar corner.

He knew if I ever returned permanently, I would eventually find a loosened board.

That was not a good estate plan.

It was a sick man improvising.

His letter admitted as much.

I kept telling myself I would fix this before you knew. That was pride. I did not want my last act as your son to be handing you a lawsuit and admitting I let my wife use your name.

I read that sentence until the ink blurred.

Then:

If I die before I tell you, do not turn me into the victim in this. Vanessa did wrong. I also stayed quiet after I knew enough to speak.

My son had written the judgment Mara and I had struggled to reach.

He loved Vanessa.

He feared leaving her exposed while he was dying.

He feared Mara would hate her.

He feared I would lose the house.

He feared conflict.

He bought time.

Sometimes time only gives lies interest.
