Chapter 23 - MARA AND HER FATHERMara struggled more after the case became clear.

At first she had a villain.

Vanessa.

Then the notebook forced her father back into the story.

She started therapy through the military.

One evening she came to the house carrying Neftalí’s old red tie.

The one from the cabin photograph.

“I found it in Dad’s boxes.”

“Burn it.”

She laughed.

“No.”

We sat on the porch.

She said:

“I’m angry he made you discover it.”

“So am I.”

“He could have called.”

“Yes.”

“He could have called me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he?”

“I think he was ashamed.”

“That’s not enough.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“You always defend him.”

“Not tonight.”

That surprised her.

I said:

“Neftalí was my son. I loved him before you existed. I loved him while he was being born, while he was stealing cookies, while he was failing algebra, while he became your father, while cancer hollowed him out. I can still say he failed us.”

Mara cried then.

Not loudly.

She said:

“I thought being angry meant I was betraying him.”

“No.”

“What does it mean?”

“That he mattered enough for his choices to matter.”

We tied the ugly red tie around the porch railing for one evening.

Then took it down before rain.
