Chapter 9 - THE CALL I SHOULD NOT HAVE MADEMy mistake came three days later.

I called Vanessa.
Ellen had told me not to.
Whitcomb had told me not to.
Mara had told me not to.
At seventy-three, apparently I required a committee to stop me doing the exact thing everyone warned me about.
Vanessa answered.
“What?”
No hello.
I said:
“I found his box.”
Silence.
Then:
“What box?”
“Neftalí’s.”
Another silence.
Longer.
I should have hung up.
Instead I said:
“He knew about the deed.”
Vanessa’s voice became flat.
“You have no idea what he knew.”
“He knew you forged my name.”
“Be careful.”
“You opened credit cards.”
“You are confused.”
That phrase.
Again.
“You don’t get to use that anymore.”
“Eulalia, you fell at my house because you were screaming and trying to push past me. Now Mara shows up and suddenly you discover secret evidence under a floor?”
My blood went cold.
“How do you know Mara was there when I found it?”
Vanessa stopped.
Maybe I had told someone.
Maybe Mara had.
Maybe police had mentioned it.
I could not know.
I said:
“You’re done.”
Then Vanessa made the sentence her lawyer would later pretend was concern.
“Someone needs to protect you from that girl.”
Mara.
Her stepdaughter.
Neftalí’s daughter.

The next morning Vanessa filed an emergency petition alleging financial exploitation and undue influence over me by Mara.
My phone call had told Vanessa where to attack.
