Chapter 15 - THE USB DRIVEThe USB required forensic extraction because Neftalí had encrypted it.

Mara guessed the password.
Not because of military genius.
Because her father used the same family joke for everything.
redtie17
The ugly red tie in the framed photograph.
On the drive were scans.
Emails.
Screenshots.
A short audio recording.
The recording was Neftalí and Vanessa arguing.
No date spoken.
Metadata placed it about four months before his death.
Neftalí:
“You used Mom’s name.”
Vanessa:
“I fixed a title problem.”
Neftalí:
“She didn’t sign it.”
Vanessa:
“You don’t know what she remembers.”
Neftalí:
“Don’t do that.”
Vanessa:
“We needed the loan.”
Then silence.
Neftalí:
“You forged her.”
Vanessa:
“You signed the refinance.”
Neftalí:
“I didn’t sign for her.”
Vanessa:
“And what are you going to do? Report your wife while you’re dying and leave Mara to clean up another family disaster?”
Mara turned off the audio.
I could not breathe normally.
It was not a confession in perfect legal language.
Vanessa did not say:
Yes, I forged the deed.
But she did not deny his accusation.
Her response centered on need.
The loan.
The family.
Consequences.
Then another line:
“I was trying to keep us afloat.”
Financial pressure.
Not greed alone.
That mattered.
Neftalí’s contracting business had struggled after two commercial clients failed to pay.
Vanessa and he carried significant credit-card debt.
Medical bills added pressure.
The $96,000 refinance had prevented default on several obligations.

Understanding motive did not reduce the forgery.
It made it plausible.
