Chapter 12 - The email I should not have sent

My mistake came on Wednesday.

Pain medication.

No sleep.

Anger.

A family email from Aunt Denise arrived:

We love you and hope everyone can find a way to calm this down.

Calm.

That word.

I snapped.

I replied to everyone.

Twenty-one addresses.

Attached photographs of my bruises.

Attached the radiology summary.

Then wrote:

For years this family has watched Graham control me and Judith interfere in our marriage. Now scans show injuries from more than one “accident.” Anyone who kept quiet is part of this. Stop protecting them.

I hit send.

Rebecca called eleven minutes later.

“Why?”

“I’m tired of them pretending.”

“You just emailed potential witnesses a theory of the case.”

“I emailed truth.”

“You emailed your interpretation before police completed interviews.”

Silence.

She continued:

“Beth is a witness. Stephen is a witness. Denise is a witness. You do not need them discussing your medical findings with each other.”

I felt sick.

“Did I ruin it?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“You complicated credibility arguments.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“Good. Now send nothing else.”

I did one corrective thing through Rebecca.

A short attorney-drafted note:

Please do not discuss facts, testimony, or medical findings with me or each other on my behalf. Cooperate independently with investigators. My prior email reflected my personal distress and should not be treated as instructions or a request to align statements.

Embarrassing.

Necessary.

Later, Judith’s lawyer used my first email.

Of course.

Nora was recruiting witnesses.

Nora had decided a family conspiracy existed.

I testified:

“I was angry and wrong to send it.”

Owning the mistake prevented them from making it mysterious.
