Chapter 17 - Graham’s lie at triage
Graham kept insisting his statement at triage was:
“Reflex.”
“She slipped. It was an accident.”
He said he was trying to keep the nurse from:
“Turning a family misunderstanding into a police matter.”
That explanation did not help.
During deposition in the divorce, Rebecca asked:
“Did you see your mother push Nora?”
Graham:
“I saw contact.”
“Did Nora tell you immediately that your mother shoved her?”
“Yes.”
“Did Beth say she saw a shove?”
“Not before the ambulance arrived.”
“Did you tell paramedics Nora slipped?”
“I said I thought she slipped.”
“Did you tell the triage nurse it was an accident?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He paused.
Then:
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“My mother getting arrested.”
There.
“Were you afraid Nora was seriously injured?”
“Yes.”
“Which fear affected your first statement?”
He stared at the table.
“My mother.”
That answer probably ended our marriage more completely than the filing.
Not because he loved Judith.
