Chapter 13 - Graham files for divorce

Graham filed first.

Three weeks after the staircase.

I expected to feel betrayed.

Instead I felt relieved.

Petition:

Irretrievable breakdown.

Division of marital property.

Temporary use of the home.

No children.

Thank God.

I had wanted children once.

The previous year had changed that conversation.

Not because I consciously knew why.

Maybe my body understood before my language did.

Our house was jointly titled.

Purchased five years earlier.

Mortgage.

Both incomes.

No giant hidden fortune.

Graham asked for temporary possession because he worked closer to the property.

Rebecca opposed while the protection order existed.

The court left me in the house temporarily after I chose to return once Graham moved to a short-term rental under agreed conditions.

That surprised me.

For weeks I assumed I would never sleep there again.

The first night back, I checked every doorway.

Not because Graham was coming.

Because architecture had become memory.

Our bedroom door.

The garage shelving.

The kitchen where Judith once entered without asking.

I slept on the couch.

Then the guest room.

Eventually the bedroom.

No dramatic reclamation.

Time.
