Chapter 24 - My body recovers

The sacral fracture healed without surgery.
Slowly.
Weight bearing as tolerated with guidance.
Walker first.
Then cane.
Then nothing.
Physical therapy.
Hip stabilizers.
Core work.
Pain.
I hated physical therapy because every exercise seemed insultingly small.
My therapist, Jonah, made me stand on one leg while holding a counter.
“This is ridiculous.”
“You fell down stairs.”
“I know.”
“Then humor me.”
I did.
My concussion symptoms resolved within weeks.
Headaches first.
Then gone.
The rib fractures were already healing by the time we found them.
No special treatment beyond time and pain management.
My wrist?
Old enough that it required no intervention beyond strengthening and monitoring.
The strange emotional part was realizing my body had healed things I had refused to name.
Bone had been making callus while I attended meetings.
Cooked dinner.
Answered Judith’s calls.
Slept beside Graham.
The body did not need my permission to classify an injury as real.
That helped.
At nine months, I walked four miles.
At a year, I carried groceries without thinking.
At two, I could run short distances.
No marathon.
No inspirational mountaintop.

Normal function.
I wanted normal.
