Chapter 25 - Beth

Beth and I became close.

Not because she testified for me.

Because she struggled afterward.

“I stood there for years.”

“With what?”

“Judith.”

“She didn’t shove everyone down stairs.”

“No.”

Beth looked down.

“She controlled rooms. We all joked about it.”

That was true.

People called Judith:

The general.

The matriarch.

Queen Bennett.

Affectionate language around control.

Beth said:

“When she pushed you, I knew immediately it wasn’t an accident. Then when Graham said to keep it inside the family, part of me almost agreed.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because that’s what we do.”

Exactly.

Beth had called 911 anyway.

That choice mattered.

She said:

“I don’t want credit.”

“Too bad.”

She smiled.

Her relationship with Judith changed too.

Not estrangement.

Distance.

She stopped Sunday dinners every week.

So did others.

The family did not disintegrate.

That shocked everyone.

Some Sundays Judith ate alone.

Some with two relatives.

Some with six.

Sometimes no dinner happened.

And civilization continued.

Tradition had been doing more emotional work than anyone admitted.
