Chapter 15 - The texts from the garage

The old injuries turned the criminal investigation wider.
Not infinitely.
Specific.
I reported the garage incident.
Medical imaging supported injuries of a compatible age.
My colleagues remembered me complaining of rib pain afterward.
Leah remembered I stopped attending yoga for three weeks because twisting hurt.
Still, none had seen Graham push me.
Investigators obtained communication records related to that date after establishing enough basis.
What they found was not a confession to deliberate assault.
It was worse in a more ordinary way.
Graham texted Judith forty-two minutes after the garage argument.
Nora and I had a bad fight. She hit the storage rack.
Judith:
Is she hurt?
Graham:
Bruised probably.
Judith:
What happened?
Graham:
I grabbed her. She pulled. I pushed her off me harder than I meant.
There.
No ambiguity about whether physical contact existed.
Judith:
Do NOT start telling people you pushed your wife. She slipped against a shelf during an argument.
Graham:
That sounds worse.
Judith:
It sounds like marriage. Keep it inside the family and fix it.
My stomach turned when Rebecca showed me the disclosed summary later.
Inside the family.
Not Graham’s phrase originally.
His mother’s.
Maybe it predated that text by decades.
Graham replied:
I’m not going to tell anyone.
Judith:
Good. And stop letting Nora bait you.
There.
That was the context behind the staircase.
Judith knew Graham had already physically hurt me.
Her response had not been:
Never touch her again.
It had been:
Control the story.
No evidence she instructed him to assault me.
No criminal conspiracy.
May you like
A family philosophy of concealment.
That distinction was enough.
