Chapter 23 - The divorce

The divorce finalized sixteen months after filing.

No giant fortune.

No hidden trust.

Just two adults with:

A jointly owned house.

Retirement accounts.

Investment accounts.

Vehicles.

Furniture.

Graham’s business interests.

My stock compensation.

Debt.

Professional fees.

Painful but ordinary accounting.

The Bennett Building Supply shares Graham had received through family gifts and trusts were mostly separate property, subject to whatever marital appreciation claims the law and our agreement recognized.

I did not want the company.

He kept them.

The house was sold.

Neither of us wanted it enough to fight.

After mortgage and costs, equity divided under settlement.

I used my portion for a smaller townhouse in a nearby suburb.

No shared garage code with anyone.

Rebecca laughed when I said that.

“You know you can just not give people the code.”

“I’m learning.”

No spousal support.

Both capable of supporting ourselves.

I kept my retirement.

He kept his, with negotiated adjustments.

No child-custody fight.

Again:

Thank God.

I returned to my birth surname two years later.

Nora Ellis.

Not immediately.

Changing documents while in physical therapy and litigation felt exhausting.

There is no moral deadline for reclaiming a name.
