Chapter 26 - The staircase again

Judith sold the house two years and seven months after the incident.
Not because I forced her.
It was large.
Expensive.
She no longer wanted the maintenance.
Beth told me.
I felt nothing initially.
Then one unexpected question:
“Are they changing the stairs?”
Beth asked:
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
The buyers renovated the basement eventually.
New railing.
Runner.
Different paint.
No significance.
Good.
I did not visit.
I did not need to stand where I had fallen to reclaim anything.
Instead, my reclamation happened in my own townhouse on a Sunday afternoon.
Leah came over.
So did Beth.
Three friends from work.
No family hierarchy.
No required attendance.
I made a casserole.
Yes.
On purpose?
Maybe partly.
Green-bean casserole.
Terrible.
Leah said:
“You know this is bad.”
“I know.”
“Symbolic?”
“Shut up.”
My townhouse had six steps down to a small sunken den.
I carried the casserole.
Beth immediately stood.
“I can take it.”
I looked at her.
Then laughed.
“No.”
She sat.
I walked down.
Slowly.
No one behind me.
Placed the dish on the table.
Nothing happened.
Leah tasted it.
“Something did happen. This is awful.”
May you like
Normal.
Perfect.
