Chapter 10 - THE MESSAGE FROM MY BROTHERPolice recovered nothing dramatic from Brandon’s phone because nobody needed a magical warrant for everything at once.

Mom voluntarily showed me a text Brandon had sent her two months earlier.
Claire is carrying a huge mortgage and working herself to death. Vanessa is right that everyone needs to contribute more.
That sentence was true.
Mostly.
I had complained about money.
To Brandon.
Not Mom.
I said:
“If you two stay longer, I need you to start paying rent.”
Brandon never did.
Instead Vanessa apparently translated the conversation into:
Claire cannot afford Mother.
Mom began paying for groceries.
Then household purchases.
Then Vanessa’s idea of “hosting expenses.”
I confronted Brandon.
“You used me.”
He said:
“I didn’t tell Vanessa to put everything on Mom’s card.”
“You let Mom believe I needed her money while you paid nothing.”
He looked sick.
“Yes.”
Not elder abuse by confession.
May you like
Financial cowardice.
Still betrayal.
