Chapter 6 - THE CAMERA DOWNLOADDetective Sarah Kim contacted me the next morning.

The camera system had thirty days of local motion-triggered storage and ninety days of cloud backups on two interior common-area cameras.
I had forgotten I was still paying for the extended plan.
Best accidental subscription of my life.
The dining-room camera had no audio.
The living-room camera did.
I signed consent for police to obtain copies relevant to the reported assault and possible elder abuse.
Mom also consented as a resident.
We did not watch ninety days in one sitting.
Investigators narrowed dates based on injuries.
Then they showed me selected clips.
The first:
Twelve days earlier.
Mom carrying laundry.
Vanessa pointing upstairs.
Mom said:
“I already did your room.”
Vanessa:
“Then do it properly.”
Mom:
“My wrist hurts.”
Vanessa:
“You don’t have anything else to do.”
I stared.
No physical violence.
Still ugly.
Next clip.
Nine days earlier.
Mom standing near the kitchen.
Vanessa grabbed her upper arm.
Hard.
Mom said:
“Let go.”
Vanessa:
“Stop pretending you can’t hear me.”
The grip lasted six seconds.
Then release.
The bruise location matched.
My stomach turned.
Next.
Six days earlier.
Mom tried to leave through the front door with a purse.
Brandon stood in the hallway.
No touching.
He said:
“Where are you going?”
“Claire’s bank.”
“Why?”
“I need to fix something.”
Brandon:
“Mom, Vanessa already handled it.”
Handled what?
Mom said:
“I don’t want her handling it.”
Brandon closed the door.
Not locked.
He did not physically restrain her.
But he stood there.
The clip ended.
I looked at Detective Kim.
May you like
“What bank?”
“We’re asking the same thing.”
