Chapter 9 - MOM TELLS ME WHY SHE STAYED QUIETI expected Mom to say she was afraid of Vanessa.

She was.

But that was not the main reason she stayed quiet.

“You were exhausted.”

I stared.

“What?”

“You called from Denver sounding exhausted.”

“So?”

“You were working nights.”

“Mom.”

“You had just paid for the roof repair.”

“So you let someone hit you?”

She looked ashamed.

“I thought it would stop.”

“Why?”

“Because Brandon said it would.”

There.

My brother’s reassurance mattered more than Vanessa’s apology.

Then Mom admitted something harder.

She was embarrassed.

“I spent forty years teaching children to speak up.”

Mom had been an elementary-school teacher.

“I thought, what kind of woman lets her daughter-in-law order her around?”

I sat beside her.

“The kind who gets slowly trained to avoid conflict.”

She looked at me.

“When did you become a therapist?”

“I didn’t. ICU has families.”

She almost smiled.

Then:

“She kept telling me it was your house and I should be grateful.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“Vanessa said you were tired of supporting me.”

My chest tightened.

“She said that?”

“Several times.”

“Did Brandon?”

May you like

Mom looked away.

Not answer enough.
