Chapter 4 - WHY I HAD BEEN GONEI had been away fourteen weeks.

Not years.
Not a secret military deployment.
An ICU nursing contract in Denver.
Our hospital had staffing shortages, and I had taken a high-paying temporary assignment through an agency after my own unit restructured.
Why?
Money.
After Dad died, I had bought the house where Mom lived.
Not in cash.
Nothing cinematic.
I used part of my savings as down payment and took a mortgage.
Dad had left medical bills.
The old family house required too much maintenance.
So I bought a newer five-bedroom suburban home.
Mom moved in.
Brandon and Vanessa were supposed to stay six months while renovating their townhouse.
Six months became eleven.
Then fourteen.
I left for Denver believing:
Mom had company.
Brandon had a place during renovation.
Vanessa could help with meals.

Everybody benefits.
I came home to find my mother serving dinner in an apron.
