Chapter 8 - BRANDON’S FIRST EXPLANATIONMy brother met me at an attorney’s office three days later.

Not home.
Neutral ground.
He looked terrible.
“I didn’t know she hit Mom that hard.”
I stared.
“That hard?”
He closed his eyes.
Wrong opening.
“What did you know?”
“Vanessa gets frustrated.”
“What did you know?”
“She grabbed her a few times.”
“What did you know?”
“Claire.”
“Did you see Vanessa slap Mom before the dinner party?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“Twice.”
My hands went cold.
“And you stayed?”
“I talked to her.”
“To Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“What did you tell Mom?”
“That Vanessa was stressed.”
I laughed.
Then cried.
“Do you hear yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
He rubbed his forehead.
May you like
“I thought it was getting better.”
That phrase belongs in too many tragedies.
