Chapter 26 - THE NEXT DINNER PARTYTwo years after the broken plate, Mom hosted dinner.

Her idea.
Eight people.
Not ten.
No Vanessa.
Brandon came.
So did his new therapist-approved nervous system, apparently.
He brought pie.
Mom refused to let anyone carry trays for her.
Then complained nobody helped.
Classic.
I stood in the kitchen making salad.
Mom walked through carrying four plates.
“Two at a time.”
“I am sixty-eight, not a hundred.”
“You dropped one.”
“Two years ago.”
“Trauma.”
“Control issues.”
“Genetic.”
She smiled.
Then deliberately handed me two plates.
Compromise.
At dinner, Brandon knocked over a wineglass.
Red wine spread across the tablecloth.
Everybody froze.
Not because of the glass.
Memory.
Brandon looked at Mom.
Mom looked at him.
Then said:
“Useless old man.”
Silence.
Then she started laughing.
Brandon laughed.
May you like
I laughed.
Everyone else joined because apparently our family healed through inappropriate jokes.
