Chapter 23 - MOM TESTIFIESMom almost refused to testify.

Then Vanessa’s lawyer characterized her as confused.

That did it.

My mother had spent thirty-eight years teaching third grade.

Nobody survived eight-year-olds for thirty-eight years by being confused.

On the stand, Mom admitted:

“Yes, I forget things sometimes.”

“Yes, I agreed to pay groceries.”

“Yes, I told Vanessa she could use my card for household purchases.”

Then:

“No, I did not give her permission to buy dresses.”

“No, I did not give permission for the spa.”

“No, I did not ask her to slap me.”

Defense asked:

“Why didn’t you leave?”

Mom said:

“Because she kept telling me it was my daughter’s house and my daughter was tired of carrying me.”

I closed my eyes.

Defense:

“Did Claire ever say that?”

“No.”

“Then why believe Vanessa?”

Mom looked toward me.

“Because Claire was working fourteen-hour shifts in another state, and I was afraid of being a burden.”

Then:

“And because once someone humiliates you enough times, you start trying to earn back dignity by being useful.”

The courtroom went silent.

No dramatic objection.

Just truth.
