Chapter 12 - MY KICKVanessa’s hip bruise was documented.

No fracture.

She made a police report.

Correctly.

I had kicked her.

My attorney, Rachel Foster, said:

“Do not call it self-defense unless that is exactly what happened.”

“It happened after she reached toward Mom.”

“Were you preventing immediate contact?”

“At first.”

“And the kick?”

I closed my eyes.

“I was angry.”

“Then say that.”

A prosecutor eventually offered me a low-level diversion resolution.

No prior record.

One strike.

Context.

But not lawful carte blanche.

Anger-management course.

Community service.

Stay-away conditions during the pending family dispute.

I accepted.

Brandon said:

“You shouldn’t have to.”

I looked at him.

“That thinking is part of why we’re here.”
