I called him.
“Did you disconnect the camera?”
Silence.
“Brandon.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa said it made her uncomfortable.”
“For fourteen hours?”
“I forgot to reconnect it.”
“Did you see anything happen during that time?”
He began crying.
I had never heard my brother cry like that.
“She shoved Mom.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Where?”
“Kitchen.”
“Did Mom fall?”
“Into the counter.”
“Was she hurt?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“And then you turned the camera back on the next morning?”
“Yes.”
He had not disabled it to hide the shove.
He had disabled it beforehand because Vanessa demanded privacy.
Then witnessed violence.
Then restored it without telling anyone.
