Chapter 2 - THE FIRST TEN MINUTESI did not watch the recordings that night.

That surprised everyone.
Especially me.
I wanted to.
Vanessa wanted to stop me.
Brandon wanted everyone to “sit down.”
The guests wanted to disappear.
Mom started shaking harder.
That decided it.
ICU training again.
Airway.
Breathing.
Circulation.
Then truth.
Not the other way around.
“Mom, sit.”
“I’m fine.”
“You are not.”
“I’m embarrassed.”
“I don’t care.”
That came out too sharply.
Her face folded.
I corrected immediately.
“I care about you. I don’t care about the dinner.”
One of the guests called 911 before anyone asked.
Good.
Brandon objected.
Also predictable.
“This is a family argument.”
Janet—the woman who had admitted seeing the slap—said:
“Your mother was hit.”
Vanessa snapped:
“And Claire assaulted me.”
Janet looked at her.
“Yes.”
Clean.
Both facts.
The paramedics arrived first.
They assessed Mom.
Blood pressure high.
No obvious acute fracture.
Tenderness at wrist, ribs, shin.
The red mark on her cheek.
Healing bruises.
They wanted her evaluated.
She refused at first.
Then looked at me.
“Will you come?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa demanded evaluation too.
Also fair.
She complained of hip pain where she struck the table.
Another ambulance was unnecessary; she could be assessed separately.
Police arrived before we left.
Officer Nathan Cole asked everyone to remain available for statements.
I told him immediately:
“I kicked Vanessa after she hit my mother.”
He looked at me.
“Did she attack you?”
“She slapped my hand when I blocked her from touching Mom.”
“And then?”
“I kicked her.”
“How many times?”
“Once.”
“Did she fall?”
“Yes.”
“Did you continue?”
“No.”
He wrote.
No excuses.
Then I told him about the camera.
He asked:
“Who owns the system?”
I almost answered.
Stopped.
“The account is under my name.”
“Who has access?”
“Me. Mom. Brandon had a guest login.”
“Vanessa?”
“I don’t know.”
Interesting.
We preserved the system before anyone touched playback.
Officer Cole photographed the screen.
I logged in under his observation.
He asked me not to browse through clips until the responding detective or appropriate investigator clarified preservation.
I wanted to argue.
Didn’t.
Mom went to the hospital.
May you like
I went with her.
The dinner party stayed behind like a crime scene decorated for Christmas.
