Chapter 5 - WHO OWNED THE HOUSEVanessa did not own the dining room.

I did.

That was the first fact she apparently hoped I had forgotten.

Not because I inherited a mansion.

Because my name was on the deed.

My mortgage.

My down payment.

My insurance.

Mom paid me a modest monthly amount for utilities because she insisted.

Brandon and Vanessa contributed nothing after month six because Brandon said their renovation had become expensive.

I allowed it.

Family.

The most expensive free word in America.

Still, ownership did not mean I could throw them into the snow that night.

They had been residents long enough that lawful removal required proper notice and local landlord-tenant procedures.

My attorney later explained that twice because anger had apparently damaged my ability to understand nouns.

I could protect Mom.

I could restrict access depending on safety orders.

But I could not become Vanessa with nicer motives.
