Chapter 10 - MY FIRST WRONG ASSUMPTIONAfter hearing Lauren’s voice on the recording, I assumed affair.

Immediately.

I told Detective Lewis:

“They’re sleeping together.”

She asked:

“Do you know that?”

“No.”

“Evidence?”

“They were holding hands at my memorial.”

“People hold hands while grieving.”

“She was wearing my wedding ring.”

“Suspicious. Not proof of an affair.”

I hated her.

Correctly, temporarily.

Lewis continued:

“We’ll investigate relationships. Don’t build motive faster than evidence.”

I failed at that within twenty-four hours.

I told my attorney, Hannah Cole:

“They planned to kill me because they want each other and the insurance.”

Hannah responded:

“Maybe.”

I stared.

“Maybe?”

“Maybe the insurance is motive. Maybe the relationship is romantic. Maybe it isn’t. You are alive. Give investigators room to disappoint your theories.”

Infuriating profession.

Necessary.
