Chapter 16 - CALEB’S QUESTION“Did Dad try to kill you?”

Caleb asked me six days after I came home.
We were staying at Patrick’s house because mine remained part of the investigation and because Evan was prohibited from contacting us under emergency orders.
I wanted to say yes.
Instead:
“Police think Dad may have done something very dangerous to me.”
Caleb frowned.
“That’s not an answer.”
Eight years old.
Already inheriting my least convenient trait.
“I remember parts. There’s evidence. The court has to decide exactly what can be proved.”
“Did Aunt Lauren?”
“I don’t know everything yet.”
“But her voice.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“I thought she loved you.”
“So did I.”
“Can someone love you and help kill you?”
There are questions no parent prepares for.
“I don’t know what Lauren felt.”
“Do you love Dad?”
My throat tightened.
“Yes.”
He looked almost angry.
“Why?”
“Because feelings don’t always disappear when someone does something terrible.”
“That’s stupid.”
“It can be.”
He cried.
Then:
“I hate him.”

I did not correct him.
He was allowed.
