Chapter 21 - MY KICK AT THE MEMORIALEvan’s attorney complained about my kicking him.

Of course.
The memorial video existed.
Several guests had been recording the gathering before I entered.
The footage showed:
Caleb holding my phone.
Evan demanding it.
Evan lunging toward him.
Me stepping between them.
One kick.
Evan falling.
Me stopping.
The district attorney reviewed it.
No charge against me.
The prosecutor told my attorney:
“Defense of the child and immediate evidence-preservation concerns make prosecution inappropriate on these facts.”
That did not make me proud.
I had injured my already damaged knee.
Physical therapy extended two weeks.
My therapist asked:
“Would you do it again?”
I said:
“I would get between them again.”
“The kick?”
I thought.
“If I could stop him another way, I would.”
Good enough.
Protective force should not become a family legend.
Caleb did not need to learn that I returned from death and defeated Dad with one heroic kick.
