Chapter 5 - THE WEDDING RINGDetective Lewis took Lauren’s necklace.

Not immediately as stolen property.
First, she asked.
“Whose ring?”
Lauren touched it.
“Rachel’s.”
“How did you get it?”
Silence.
Evan answered:
“It was recovered.”
Lewis looked at him.
“From where?”
“Near the reservoir.”
“By whom?”
“A volunteer.”
“Name?”
Evan hesitated.
Lauren said:
“I don’t know.”
That became suspicious because investigators had no record of my wedding ring being found during the official search.
My ring had been on my hand the night I disappeared.
I remembered that.
Barely.
But I remembered gripping the steering wheel.
Gold against black leather.
Detective Lewis asked Lauren to remove it.
Lauren did.
Very carefully.
Caleb watched from the kitchen doorway.
“Why were you wearing Mom’s ring?”
Lauren’s face broke.
“Caleb—”
He repeated:
“Why?”
Evan stepped forward.
A uniformed officer blocked him.
Lauren whispered:
“Because I missed her.”
My son stared.
“You thought she was dead for six days.”

No one had taught him the cruelty of precision yet.
I was glad.
