Chapter 3 - I WAS NOT OFFICIALLY DEADDetective Mara Lewis explained that to me later.

The memorial was not a funeral.

No death certificate existed.

No court had declared me dead.

I had been missing for six days.

My SUV had been found partially submerged downstream from a washed-out access road near Red Hollow Reservoir.

Driver’s door open.

Blood on the interior door frame.

My purse inside.

One shoe recovered from muddy water thirty yards away.

Search dogs lost scent at the shoreline.

Divers searched.

No body.

The working assumption became that I had entered the water and been carried beyond the primary search zone.

Evan apparently told Caleb:

“Mommy is with Grandma now.”

My mother had died nine years earlier.

Caleb refused to believe him.

So Evan and Lauren organized what they called a celebration of life.

Too soon?

In my opinion, yes.

But grief does not have mandatory scheduling.

There were practical reasons too.

Family had flown in.

The search was scaling down.

A church minister had offered the house gathering.

The bronze urn was symbolic.

No cremains.

Nothing fraudulent about the memorial itself.

That mattered.

Because after I returned, people online turned every object into proof of conspiracy.

The giant portrait.

The flowers.

The urn.

Lauren’s dress.

Reality gave us enough actual evidence.

We did not need to prosecute decorations.
