Chapter 26 - CALEB AND THE PHONEThree years after my memorial, Caleb was eleven.

The cracked phone remained evidence for a long time.
Then official copies were preserved and the physical device became eligible for return.
Detective Lewis asked whether I wanted it.
I almost said yes.
Then I asked Caleb.
“No.”
Immediate.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me like the answer was obvious.
“It was a terrible phone even before Dad stole it.”
I laughed.
Then he became serious.
“I don’t want the recording.”
“We wouldn’t keep that on it.”
“I know.”
He looked down.
“I just don’t want the phone.”
So I authorized disposal after legal preservation requirements were satisfied.
No smashing.
No river.
No symbolic burial.
Electronics recycling.
Caleb asked:
“Do they take the dinosaur sticker off?”
“I doubt it.”
“Good.”
“Why good?”
“Someone should know it wasn’t completely boring.”
At eleven, humor had returned to places I thought would remain untouchable.
That was healing too.
