Chapter 7 - CALEB FOUND IT BECAUSE EVAN TOOK HIS TABLETCaleb should not have been investigating his father.

He was eight.

The adults had failed enough already.

But children notice things.

The night before the memorial, Evan took away Caleb’s tablet because Caleb had searched:

people survive river car

Then:

how long can missing people be alive

Then:

mom found after drowning

Evan told him:

“You need to stop doing this to yourself.”

Caleb became angry.

He went outside to retrieve a comic book he had left in Evan’s truck earlier.

He saw something black beneath the passenger seat.

My phone.

He recognized the dinosaur sticker.

He did not tell Evan.

He hid it inside his jacket.

Then charged it using an old cable in his bedroom.

The battery was damaged but held enough power.

The next morning he found the video.

He listened to part.

Not all.

Then brought the phone to my memorial.

That fact terrified me later.

My child had spent the morning carrying potential evidence against his own father.

No eight-year-old should have to decide what to do with that.

We enrolled him in therapy immediately.

Not because he was damaged beyond repair.

Because adults were going to put words like conspiracy, insurance, attempted homicide, and evidence into the air around him.

He deserved one room where none of those words required him to choose sides.
