Chapter 9 - LAUREN AND MELauren was my younger sister by three years.

Growing up, I was the rule follower.

Lauren was the person who climbed out her bedroom window because using the front door felt “oppressive.”

I studied engineering.

She changed colleges twice, then became excellent at insurance administration because it turned out she had an extraordinary memory for people and paperwork.

She was also better with Caleb than almost anyone.

That mattered.

He adored her.

She took him to museums.

Remembered every ridiculous dinosaur name.

Sat with him after nightmares when my mother died.

When Evan and I had a serious marital rough patch two years earlier, Lauren was the person who told me:

“Don’t stay just because divorce is embarrassing.”

That memory made everything afterward harder.

Villains are easier when they were never kind.

Lauren had been kind.

Often.

She had also become close to Evan.

I noticed.

Did not interpret it correctly.

They texted about Caleb.

Money.

My schedule.

Family dinners.

Once I joked:

“You two communicate more than we do.”

Lauren answered:

“Someone has to keep him organized.”

Evan smiled.

May you like

I did not.

Something had already shifted.
