Chapter 25 - LAUREN’S SENTENCELauren’s case was different because prosecutors could not prove she initiated the confrontation or controlled the SUV.

They could prove:

She helped process forged insurance paperwork.

She went to Red Hollow.

She spoke about ensuring I remained inside before the vehicle moved.

She left without calling for help.

She removed my wedding ring.

She helped Evan construct parts of the false narrative afterward.

She participated.

Her eventual plea reflected conspiracy to commit serious violent conduct, insurance-related fraud, and evidence-related offenses.

Her sentence was significantly shorter than Evan’s.

Still custodial.

Still years.

She apologized at sentencing.

Not elegantly.

“I loved my sister.”

People in the courtroom reacted.

The judge stopped them.

Lauren continued:

“I know saying that sounds obscene.”

It did.

“I kept choosing the next thing that protected me and Evan from what we had already done.”

Better.

Then:

“I took her ring because I thought if I had one piece of her, I could pretend I was grieving instead of responsible.”

I closed my eyes.

The ring was returned to me after evidentiary proceedings allowed.

I did not put it back on.
