Chapter 11 - THE FIRST DIGITAL RECORDLauren had accessed my policy file eleven times in the month before I disappeared.

Her job allowed some access.

But she was not normally assigned as the primary representative on my existing coverage.

Another employee was.

Lauren manually reassigned the account to herself.

Why?

She said Evan requested “family handling.”

There was no written request.

Then investigators found an electronic application for the additional $1.25 million policy.

Submitted five days before I disappeared.

Status:

Pending final underwriting review.

Insured consent:

Electronic signature appearing to be mine.

I had not signed it.

IP address:

Our home network.

Device:

A laptop registered to Evan.

That did not automatically prove he created the signature.

The laptop was shared.

But the time was 11:43 p.m.

I had been in Denver for a Brighton conference.

Evan was home.

Lauren visited that evening according to doorbell footage.

The application had not yet become an active policy.

That mattered enormously.

No $1.25 million payout existed to collect.

Whatever they planned, if insurance motivated it, they had acted before underwriting was complete.

That made the scheme look either less sophisticated or more desperate.

Both possibilities frightened me.
