Chapter 24 - Michael’s apology

The first apology was part of sentencing.

It meant little to me.

The later one mattered more.

Three years had nearly passed.

Family court permitted written communication concerning Mae through a monitored parenting app after Michael’s release.

One message was addressed to me but required no response.

I used the baby as an argument against your right to say no.

I stopped.

Then:

I told myself you were too sick to make decisions, but I never sought any lawful medical finding that you lacked capacity because I knew I probably would not get one.

Specific.

I locked the door because I wanted to stop you leaving.

Specific.

I filmed you after you told me not to because the channel had become part income, part identity, and part proof that people thought I was a good husband.

There.

I edited your refusals out because I knew they would change what viewers thought.

Then:

I believed I could control how everyone saw the situation until you agreed with me.

And finally:

Mae was never responsible for what I did to you. Being afraid for her did not give me authority over you.

I read the whole message.

Did not answer.

My forgiveness was not required for his accountability to be real.
