Chapter 4 - The channel

Michael called it Stronger Together.

The name sounded harmless.

At first it was.

He started the account two years earlier after losing seventy pounds.

Exercise.

Meal prep.

Marriage jokes.

Home renovation.

Then my pregnancy.

At twelve weeks, I became sick.

Really sick.

Hospital once.

Then twice.

Michael posted a short video about supporting a spouse through hyperemesis.

It got more engagement than anything he had ever uploaded.

People were kind.

Mostly.

They sent messages:

You’re a great husband.

Thank you for showing the hard parts.

Men need to see caregiving.

Michael liked it.

I liked it at first too.

I was tired of pregnancy being portrayed as glowing skin and cute cravings.

I agreed to appear in several videos.

Talking about nausea.

Hospitalization.

The guilt of not being excited every minute.

Then the comments changed.

Viewers asked for:

Day in the life.

Feeding updates.

Weight.

Tube placement.

Hospital footage.

I said no to most.

Michael said:

“We don’t have to share anything you don’t want.”

At first, he meant it.

Then Stronger Together grew.

Not enormous.

Around 140,000 followers across platforms.

A private subscription group with several thousand paying members.

Affiliate links.

Sponsors.

Ad revenue.

Our monthly household income from the channel varied between four and nine thousand dollars.

Good money.

Not mansion money.

Enough to matter.

Michael reduced hours at his sales job.

Then quit completely three months before my escape.

I opposed that.

He said the channel had become:

“Our business.”

I said:

“It is your business.”

He laughed.

“No one watches without you.”

That sentence became more literal than I understood.

The worse my illness became, the better certain videos performed.

Not all.

The clips where Michael looked exhausted.

Where he cleaned feeding equipment.

Where Patricia criticized “modern pregnancy helplessness.”

Where I cried.

Those did well.

I began refusing the camera.

Michael began filming anyway and saying:

“I won’t post it unless you approve.”

I discovered two clips posted that I had never approved.

We fought.

He removed them.

Then created a private subscriber tier.

He said it was for:

“Raw caregiving discussions.”

I did not have the password.

The attic footage went there.

May you like

I did not know how much.

Not yet.
