Chapter 26 - The attic door

The house sold to a young couple.

Before closing, the buyer requested that the outside attic latch be removed.

Our realtor asked whether I wanted it returned.

“No.”

Of course not.

Then I reconsidered for three seconds.

Evidence.

Symbol.

Proof.

No.

Police photographs existed.

Court records existed.

My body remembered.

I did not need hardware in a drawer.

The buyers converted the room into an office.

I knew because the listing photographs appeared online years later after they refinanced and an automated real-estate site updated images.

Desk.

Bookshelf.

Yellow rug.

Door opening inward.

No latch.

I stared longer than I should have.

Then closed the browser.

Rooms do not owe us loyalty.
