CHAPTER 47 — THE SANATORIUM SLAUGHTER
Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger, the gold-plated revolver flying from Victoria’s lap as a bullet caught her in the shoulder. The old matriarch fell back into her chair, gasping in pain but her eyes still filled with a terrifying, mocking laughter.
"Kill them all!" Julian roared to his mercenaries.
The room erupted into a savage, close-quarters firefight. Claire grabbed Lily, throwing her body over the little girl as she fired blindly into the advancing guards. Alexander burst through the shattered glass door, his assault rifle roaring as he emptied a magazine into Julian’s security detail.
Anna Carter appeared from the extraction corridor, carrying a heavy tactical shield, absorbing a volley of bullets to give Claire an exit route.
"The lower level is rigged with thermite!" Anna screamed over the deafening noise. "Lord Edward has ordered a full purge of the facility! They're burning the evidence!"

Julian, bleeding from a graze on his cheek, grabbed the heavy leather case containing the white-gold shoes and sprinted toward the main vault elevator at the back of the room. "The termination sequence belongs to the Vance family now!" he shouted into the smoke.
"He's going to activate the satellites!" Alexander yelled, his heart monitor screaming a continuous, high-pitched flatline warning as his pacemaker began to fail under the immense stress. He collapsed against the wall, his weapon slipping from his fingers. "Claire... you have to stop him... the white shoes... they can destroy everything..."
