CHAPTER 79 — THE TERMS OF THE ANCESTORS

The grand double doors of the French diplomatic villa were opened from the inside by the compound’s own security chief. Eleanor Whitmore walked into the marble foyer with the measured, rhythmic click of her high heels, completely unbothered by the tactical rifles Claire and Anna were aiming at her chest.

"Lower the toys, children," Eleanor said smoothly, pulling off her white leather gloves and setting them on the console table. "The French government has already signed the extradition waivers. This property is no longer a sanctuary."

"You lied to us," Claire spat, her vision blurring with tears of pure rage. "You stood in that room and told me you loved my daughter enough to clear the wallpaper! You let Alexander die!"

Eleanor’s expression didn't change; her eyes remained fixed on Claire with the cold, absolute detachment of a woman who had spent forty years managing a multi-billion dollar chess board.

"Alexander’s heart was a defective design from the moment Harrison cloned him, Claire," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into an icy, resonant register.

  • "He was built to be a transition piece, nothing more."

  • "I gave you twelve months to solve the riddle of the shoes, but you chose to run to the jungle instead."

  • "Now, the European markets are in total liquidation, and the New Renaissance Group requires the final synchronization code."

She pointed to the small leather box Anna was holding. "The chromatic pearl shoe holds the localized encryption database. Hand it over, and I will ensure you and Anna are given permanent identities and a secure estate in New Zealand. Refuse... and the chrome transport outside will take Lily by force, and your names will be added to the federal red notices before midnight."

Lily walked down the grand staircase, her small feet bare against the cold marble, holding the single chromatic shoe in her arms. "Grandma Eleanor? Why are your eyes green like the scary room?"

Eleanor knelt down, extending her arms to the little girl. "Come here, Lily. It’s time to go to the real house. The one your great-grandfather built for you."
