Chapter 71

CHAPTER 71 — THE COLD PARLOR OF CHARLES WHITMORE
The heavy mahogany door didn’t just slam; the locking mechanisms within the frame engaged with a succession of deep, hydraulic clicks that vibrated through the floorboards. The air inside the grand hallway instantly thickened, smelling of old paper, pipe tobacco, and the ozone scent of a high-voltage data terminal.
Claire kept her weapon leveled at her father's chest, her finger white against the trigger. "Alex, don't look at his face. It’s an optical illusion. Another puppet built in a lab."
"Is it, Claire?" Charles Whitmore chuckled, setting his whiskey glass down on the tea table right next to the shifting, chromatic pearl baby shoes. He took a slow step forward, the firelight catching the sharp, silver lines of his hair.
"Your grandmother Victoria treated the genetic code like a ledger to be balanced. She thought in numbers. I thought in legacies. A machine can copy a face, Alexander, but it cannot duplicate the specific neurological weight of a man who watched his own family empire rewrite the laws of global commerce."
Alexander stepped up beside Claire, his knuckles white around his pistol grip, his chest heaving. "We buried you in the family vault in 2016, Charles. I stood by the casket. I signed the death certificate."

"You buried a synthetic hull with my biometric markers, son," Charles said, his emerald-green eyes flashing with a patronizing warmth. "If I had stayed alive in the public eye, the Vanguard Group would have dismantled Whitmore Enterprises within a fiscal quarter. I had to become a ghost so that Julian Vance and Thomas would spend their fortunes chasing shadows while I finalized the real architecture right here under their feet."
A frantic beep shattered the tension. Claire glanced down at the phone in her left hand. The live video feed from the SUV down the road was still active, but the camera angle had shifted.
Victoria Lane had been dragged out of the driver's seat, her scarred face pressed against the wet gravel by two white-suited clones. In the center of the screen, the young Claire clone—Iteration Four—was holding Lily's hand.
Lily wasn't struggling. She was staring at the chromatic pearl shoe in the clone’s hand, her lips moving in that same silent, rhythmic chant they had heard in the waters of Da Nang.

"Alex," Claire choked out, the horror paralyzing her diaphragm. "The clone... she has Lily."
"She has the future, Claire," Charles corrected smoothly, reaching out his hand toward the chromatic shoes on the table. "And now, it's time to open the final ledger."
