CHAPTER 53 — THE FIRST GHOST

Alexander raised his weapon, but Julian’s exoskeleton moved with terrifying, unnatural speed. With a single backhand, Julian shattered the stock of Alexander’s rifle, throwing him across the steel platform into the rusted guardrails.

"Alex!" Claire fired three rapid shots into Julian’s chest, but the bullets simply flattened against the reinforced titanium plating of his chest rig.

"The era of small guns is over, my love," Julian whispered, his hydraulic hand locking around Claire’s throat, lifting her off her feet with effortless, brutal precision. He turned his gaze to Lily, who was still standing frozen in the boat, holding the jade shoe.

"The child is the third generation of the lineage," Julian said, dragging Claire toward a massive, central sarcophagus made of solid jade and polished steel that sat at the apex of the room. "The Monarch Grid wasn't an AI network, Claire. It was an awakening sequence. And the man inside this box has been waiting fifty-four years for his granddaughter's blood."

Through the golden glass of the sarcophagus, a silhouette became visible. It was an elderly man, his features preserved perfectly by the amber oil filling the chamber.

Claire choked for air, her vision blurring as she stared at the face inside the glass. It wasn't her grandfather, Arthur, or Thomas.

It was Harrison Whitmore—the original architect of the family fortune, the man whose funeral in 1968 had triggered the creation of the entire global charity network.

"He didn't die of a stroke, Claire," Julian whispered in her ear, his breath smelling of sterile chemicals. "He discovered the neural cure in the mountains of Vietnam, used it on himself, and went to sleep until the technology caught up with his vision. Your grandmother didn't lock you away to protect you. She locked you away to keep your blood pure until the harvest."
