CHAPTER 69 — THE RESCUE AT SEA
The evacuation of the sinking laboratory was a race against the Atlantic current. The Elysium Enclave capsized completely at 4:15 AM, its massive steel towers grinding against each other as they plunged into the dark water of the gulf, creating a massive whirlpool that threatened to drag their small tactical boat down into the abyss.
Victoria Lane steered them through the wreckage, her face covered in blood from a stray splinter, her teeth bared against the wind. "We have twenty minutes before the local coast guard arrives to secure the debris! Where are we going, Alexander?!"
Alexander lay in the back of the boat, his head resting in Anna’s lap. His pacemaker was completely dark, its battery entirely drained by the final electromagnetic pulse of the vault. He was breathing slowly, his pulse weak but steady—his heart had somehow restarted its natural rhythm after twenty years of mechanical dependency.
"The data didn't go to New York, and it didn't stay in Asia," Alexander whispered, his eyes opening slowly as he looked up at Claire, who was holding Lily wrapped in a dry emergency blanket. "The tracking beacon on my monitor... before the screen died... it showed the primary download completed at a private medical estate in Virginia. The old family estate where our father grew up."
Claire looked down at Lily. The little girl’s eyes had returned to their normal, clear brown color, but her small hands were still cold, her fingers tracing the faded ribbon of the old white box that sat empty on her lap.
