Chapter 63

CHAPTER 63 — THE FIRST UPGRADE
By the time they cleared the river mouth and entered the open, choppy waters of the Gulf, the storm had caught up with them. The tropical sky was an oppressive sheet of bruised purple, lightning dancing along the horizon in silent, jagged webs.
In the distance, rising out of the mist like a cluster of floating steel islands, was the Elysium Enclave. It was a massive, semi-submersible platform, five times larger than Fort Preble, its multi-tiered decks lit by the eerie, pale blue glare of industrial ultraviolet lights.
"We have an uninvited guest," Anna said, her eyes fixed on the scanner. "A vessel is approaching from our stern. No transponder. Moving too fast for a standard patrol boat."
Alexander focused his flashlight on the dark waves behind them. A long, black carbon-fiber interceptor boat was closing the gap, cutting through the waves with impossible stability. Standing at the bow, completely unaffected by the gale-force winds, was the young clone—Instance Three.
He was dressed in the same pristine white suit, but his right arm had been modified. From the elbow down, his sleeve was torn away, revealing a complex web of subdermal titanium wiring and biometric sensors that pulsed with a dark, rhythmic violet light. He was holding a heavy, silenced pneumatic rifle.

"Claire," Instance Three’s voice drifted across the water, amplified by a directional acoustic transmitter. It sounded exactly like Alexander’s voice from twenty years ago—hollow, beautiful, and dead.
"Your grandmother has monitored your approach. She is impressed by your resilience, but the calculations are complete. The child has already accepted the first stage of the obsidian integration. If you attempt to board the platform with the previous keys, the feedback loop will liquefy her nervous system. Give me the box, and you may live out your remaining days in the interior provinces."
"Fire," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register that made even Victoria Lane hesitate. "Don't let him speak. Don't let him look at me with those eyes."
May you like
Alexander pulled the pin on a localized electromagnetic grenade, launching it directly at the interceptor's path. The blast created a white ring of static across the water, short-circuiting the clone’s arm sensors for a fraction of a second, causing his boat to veer sharply into the trough of a massive wave.
"Boarding lines ready!" Victoria Lane shouted as they rammed their bow directly against the lowest maintenance dock of the floating laboratory. "Welcome to the butcher shop."
