Chapter 54

CHAPTER 54 — THE CHESSBOARD SHIFTS

"Let her go, Julian."
The voice didn't come from Alexander or Anna. It echoed from the high gantries near the ceiling of the flooded cathedral.
A lone figure stepped out of the darkness, dressed in the uniform of a high-ranking officer of the Vietnamese Maritime Security Force. But when he pulled off his cap, his face revealed the unmistakable aristocratic features of the Whitmore line.
It was Thomas.
He had survived the raid at Fort Preble, his hands heavily bandaged, but his presence here wasn't backed by federal agents. Behind him stood a dozen highly trained local black-ops commandos, their weapons already trained on Julian’s hydraulic joints.
"Thomas," Julian hissed, his grip on Claire loosening slightly. "You have no authority here. The Vance family built this vault."
"The Vances paid for the steel, Julian, but the ground belongs to the ancestors," Thomas said, walking down the metal stairs with an eerie, measured calm. "My father brought me into this family to be a watchdog, not a puppet. I spent forty years thinking I was an outsider, until I realized Harrison didn't adopt me from Europe. He cloned me from himself."
The revelation struck the room like a physical blow. Alexander, spitting blood from his lip, looked up in horror. "A clone...?"

"Every male child in this family is an iteration, Alexander," Thomas said, a cold, detached pity in his eyes. "Arthur was the failed prototype—too aggressive, too unstable. You were the golden boy, meant to inherit the clean side of the ledger. But Lily... Lily is the first successful female strain. The only one whose cellular structure can bond with the primary oil inside that box without triggering a total neurological collapse."
Thomas gestured to his men. "Kill the machine. Secure the girl."
