CHAPTER 60 — THE JADE AND THE ASHES

Claire picked up the phone. The screen displayed a live audio-video feed broadcasting from a pristine, white laboratory deep inside the Elysium Enclave.

Lily was sitting in a silver chair, her long hair covered in biometric sensors. She looked perfectly healthy, but her eyes were completely empty, staring at a small table in front of her.

On the table sat the final piece of the grandfather's puzzle.

It was a fifth pair of baby shoes. These weren't made of leather, cloth, or gold. They were cast in a polished, shifting obsidian glass that seemed to absorb the light around them, creating a localized visual distortion on the camera feed.

Victoria Whitmore stood behind the chair, her hand resting on Lily’s shoulder as she looked directly into the camera lens, knowing exactly who was watching the feed.

"The four generations are complete, Claire," Victoria’s voice echoed through the phone speaker, cold and triumphant. "The red, the blue, the black, the white, and the jade were just the keys to build the lock. The obsidian pair... this is the final inheritance. The code that determines which generation gets to survive the coming collapse."

On the screen, Lily slowly lifted her right hand. Her fingers were no longer glowing green; they were cast in a deep, absolute shadow, the air around her small fingers warping with a strange, gravitational pull.

"Mommy," Lily whispered into the microphone, her voice sounding completely detached, as if echoing from the bottom of a deep, dark well. "The black shoes are turning into glass. The grandfathers are standing behind the door. They told me to ask you... if you want to see what's on the other side of the wallpaper."

Suddenly, the video feed didn't cut out—it began to bleed backward through the network.

The electrical outlets inside Claire’s hospital room in Bangkok began to spark, the monitors letting out a high-pitched, synchronized whine as the digital shadow from the phone screen began to crawl up the walls of their room, the shadow forming the distinct, colossal shape of the iron cathedral rising from the sea.

Outside the window, the entire skyline of Bangkok suddenly flickered once—and died completely, plunging the city of millions into a terrifying, silent darkness as a low, mechanical rumble began to vibrate from the waters of the river below their hotel.
