Chapter 76

CHAPTER 76 — THE RECONSTRUCTION
The escape through the limestone fissures was a grueling, desperate climb through the dark. By the time Claire, Lily, and Anna broke through the surface into the woods behind the Virginia estate, the colonial mansion was already burning, white-hot smoke pouring from the windows as the subterranean fire consumed the upper structure.
The rented SUV was gone—Victoria Lane had managed to break free during the distraction, leaving behind two neutralized clones and a trail of tire tracks heading north toward Washington, D.C.
"We have to go to ground," Anna said, her face blackened by soot, her breathing ragged as she bandaged Claire’s torn shoulder with a strip of linen. "The feds will be here in fifteen minutes. A thermite signature that large will trigger every satellite in the sector."
Claire sat against the trunk of an ancient oak tree, holding Lily tightly against her chest. The little girl was shivering, her eyes wide but clear, the dark obsidian shadow completely gone from her pupils.

"The shoe," Lily whispered, reaching into her pocket and pulling out the single, chromatic pearl baby shoe she had snatched from the tea table before the floor collapsed. "I kept it, Mommy. It stopped ticking when Uncle Alex broke the computer."
Claire took the small, shifting pearl shoe, looking at the exquisite, terrifying craftsmanship.

"It didn't stop ticking, Lily," Claire murmured, her voice dead and hollow as she noticed a tiny, microscopic blue light pulsing deep within the translucent heel. "It switched frequencies. The data didn't burn in that vault. Alexander didn't destroy the ledger... he just forced it to migrate into the only mobile drive left on the network."
She looked at Anna, the horrifying truth dawning on both of them. The chromatic shoe was no longer a key. It was the sole remaining copy of the Monarch Grid.
