Chapter 12 - My mistake

I made one too.
Two days after Ella came home, Margaret texted:
You are turning Luke against his own mother.
I should have blocked her.
Instead I responded:
If you put anything in my daughter’s body without permission, I will make sure you never see her again.
She replied:
There it is. You’ve been waiting for this.
I kept going.
You nearly killed her.
That was the mistake.
We did not know medically that the exposure had nearly killed Ella in a provable sense.
It had produced a severe breathing emergency.
Serious enough.
But:
Nearly killed her
became a defense exhibit.
Sarah decided outcome before investigation.
Sarah wanted Margaret permanently excluded.
Sarah had motive to shape testimony.
Did my angry text make Margaret innocent?
No.
Did it complicate my credibility?
A little.
Our attorney, Rebecca Lane, was furious.
“Stop contacting her.”
“She contacted me.”
“Then stop responding.”
“I’m allowed to be angry.”
“Yes.”
“I’m allowed to say what happened.”
“You are allowed to say what you know happened.”
That distinction stayed with me.
